In Guangdong province in 1968, teenage orphan Ming works in the fields with other villagers. His mother died in the famine during China’s Great Leap Forward, and his father likely died by gunshot while attempting to swim to Hong Kong. Li, a Red Guard sent with soldiers to learn farming, becomes Ming’s friend. Ming teaches Li to swim, and Li helps him see Fei, a girl he likes. As Li learns about the village’s recent history, he begins to question whether Mao’s words and policies serve everyone.
