In 1906, Soper investigated illness in a New York City family and concluded that their cook, Mallon, was the likely bacterial source. Mallon rejected the idea that she carried typhoid. After later outbreaks were linked to her, she was quarantined on Brother’s Island, raising a civil-rights question about confinement against her will.
