Family/School/Community The All-Together Quilt

Lizzy Rockwell, illustrated by Lizzy Rockwell

Every Friday, Jennifer and her friends gather at a community center to create a quilt. Each child works with an older adult, tracing, cutting, pinning, and sewing fabric squares. After making eight paired squares and one center square bearing a peace sign, the group considers nine arrangements before choosing a design. They then add a border that includes the children’s handprints. The mixed-age, diverse quilting group is based on a community project in a senior housing complex. Endnotes identify fabrics and introduce nine traditional quilt blocks.
