Binh’s Vietnamese American family spends a weekend at a Buddhist silent meditation retreat. His parents and older sister welcome the trip, but Binh expects to miss his GameBoy and to face questions about a recent fight with a bully who made racist comments about his heritage. During breaks, Sister Peace tells the children Jataka tales about the Buddha’s past lives. Binh imagines the parables as video-game levels and considers what their lessons about inner wisdom, family, friends, and community mean for his own experience.
