Nineteen-year-old Eddy Smallbone lives with his uncle and earns money through grocery-store work and dog walking. In Christchurch, New Zealand, he takes on new responsibilities when a dog-walking job becomes care for two children, and he is also hired to look after a cockatoo. Reconnecting with his former girlfriend Boo brings back their attraction. Alongside these changes, the story reveals experiences that deeply unsettled Eddy: the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, his friend Toss’s health problems, and events involving Boo.
