Doing Her Bit: A Story about the Woman’s Land Army of America

Based on World War I events, this fictional story follows Helen Stevens, a “farmerette” in the Woman’s Land Army of America. As young men leave farm work for military service, women volunteer and train to help increase food production. Helen learns to farm, then faces the challenge of persuading a farm owner to employ her and her fellow workers. She also seeks equal pay for equal work. The story is grounded in real people and a real place, with paintings showing the period and the work performed on farms.
