Dario and the Whale

Cheryl Lawton Malone, illustrated by Bistra Masseva

Dario moves with his mother to a beach town for seasonal work, while a right whale and her calf arrive in the same bay. Dario has difficulty making friends because he does not speak English well. His experiences on the beach echo the young whale’s movements: Dario flies a kite, bumps into someone, and runs along the shore, while the whale chases fish, encounters a sea turtle, and leaps from the water. The boy and whale eventually see one another and look for each other until the whales migrate away.
