In the kingdom of Orïsha, Zélie belongs to the maji, whose magic was suppressed after the killing of many magic practitioners, including her mother. Diviners such as Zélie cannot come into their powers. Amari, daughter of King Saran, flees after witnessing her father kill her friend Binta for touching a scroll that awakens magic. She brings the scroll to Zélie, who travels with Amari and her brother Tzain to restore the link between the maji and their gods. The fantasy draws on African cultures, geography, and Yoruba language.
