Eleven-year-old Conor loves hockey, his father, and Sinbad, the Doberman his family rescued. After Sinbad receives a cancer diagnosis, Conor’s father says he should still pursue a place on a AAA hockey team, but the family stops his private lessons to help cover the dog’s treatment. Conor worries about losing Sinbad and about his father, who remains sad after a divorce and faces stress in his job as a police traffic officer. As hockey no longer defines every part of his life, Conor reconnects with his Japanese American grandparents and confronts change in his family.
