By the Numbers 3.14 is a collection of infographics that turns statistics, measurements and records into pictures. More than a hundred illustrated spreads use graphs, pie charts, word clouds, maps, comparative images and photography to make very large or very fast numbers concrete: 318,979,564,000 ways to play the first four moves of a chess game, or 500 beats per minute for a hummingbird's heart. The subjects range from science and technology to nature, wildlife, sports and television, so the numbers are attached to things readers already recognise. Short question-and-answer features introduce people who work with numbers, such as computer programmers and data artists. The square-format book is designed to be browsed rather than read straight through, and National Geographic Kids published it in 2017.
