Bittersweet: Based on the True Tale of the Berlin Candy Bombers
Christy Mandin, illustrated by Christy Mandin
During the Berlin Airlift, U.S. Air Force pilot Gail Halvorsen delivers supplies to West Berlin while the city is blockaded by the Soviets. After sharing two sticks of gum with children waiting outside the airport, he sees them pass the wrappers around so each child can smell the mint. Halvorsen begins dropping candy from his plane with tiny parachutes, using his own rations and signaling children below by wiggling the wings.
