Before Morning

A child wishes for snow to bring the family an unhurried day together at home. The child’s mother is preparing to leave for her job as a pilot, and the prospect of her departure is painful. As snow falls across the city and piles up at the airport, the flight is canceled. The mother returns home on a snowplow, joining the family for breakfast. The poem is an invocation, or wish, and the story opens with wordless winter scenes of mother and child returning home.
