Bao, a Taiwanese American girl, wants an All-American Artist Amanda doll, but feels her mother does not understand either that wish or Bao’s hope for greater closeness. After Bao is caught attempting to take the doll from a store, the silence between them deepens. Bao apologizes, and her mother shares parts of her childhood in Taiwan, including a time living away from her own mother. They use keepsakes from an old tin box to make a doll modeled on Bao, bringing new understanding to their relationship.
