At Night All Blood is Black: A Novel
David Diop; Translated from the French by Anna Moschovakis
During World War I, Alfa Ndiaye, a Senegalese man who has never previously left his village, serves with the French army. His regiment companion Mademba Diop is badly hurt in combat and asks Alfa to end his suffering in No Man’s Land. Alfa cannot do so. The refusal becomes a source of guilt, which he views as cowardice, and his mind begins to unravel. The novel follows the consequences of that moment amid war.
