In April 1916, suffragists Nell Richardson and Alice Burke leave New York City in a small yellow car for a 10,000-mile journey around the United States. Their route is muddy, rough, and largely unmapped. They bring a typewriter, sewing machine, and black kitten as they travel, carrying a message in support of votes for women. The book recounts their cross-country campaign to bring that message to people throughout the country.
