Seven-year-old Anna is alone in Krakow after German authorities take her father, a linguistics professor, during a purge of Polish intellectuals. She meets a tall stranger she calls the Swallow Man and becomes his traveling companion. He speaks many languages, teaches her about the Germans and Russians through animal names, and explains the language of the road. When Reb Hirschl joins them, the three travel across Poland and into the Soviet Union while avoiding armies at war.
