Nia loves Alfie, her pet turtle, even though he is quiet, cannot perform tricks, and is easy to overlook. On the night before Nia’s seventh birthday, Alfie disappears. The story then shifts to Alfie’s perspective as he searches for a birthday gift for Nia. His journey takes him through the house, past the family dog, onto the fire escape, into the yard, and through a sandbox before he becomes cold and tired.
