A Stopwatch from Grampa

Loretta Garbutt

At the start of summer, a child receives Grampa’s stopwatch after his death. The object brings back memories of the many things Grampa timed, from races and ice-cream eating to a caterpillar’s trip up a pant leg, but those memories are initially too painful. The child puts the stopwatch away in a sweater drawer as the seasons pass. When it is found again, the immediate hurt has eased, and it recalls warmer memories of time spent with a beloved grandparent. The story follows loss, remembrance, and gradual healing.
