A Sari for Ammi

Mamta Nainy, illustrated by Sandhya Prabhat

In Kaithoon, India, two sisters want to give their mother one of the saris she weaves, because she wears a worn shalwar kameez instead. Their parents dye thread and weave saris, but the family needs the saris’ income for food. The girls count their savings and find it will not cover a sari. They collect old items to sell to a scrap dealer, then help an aunt dye thread to earn more. Together, their efforts finally provide enough money for the gift.
