A River’s Gifts: The Mighty Elwha River Reborn

This account follows the Elwha River in the Pacific Northwest and its relationship with the Elwha Klallam Tribe, also called the Strong People. For thousands of years, salmon, forest, river, and people sustained one another. Dams built in 1910 and 1926 disrupted salmon, habitats, riverbanks, and tribal lands. When the dam licenses came up for renewal, the Strong People and their allies worked for removal. The book describes the years-long rehabilitation of the river by scientists, tribal experts, and volunteers.
