In 1946, twelve-year-old Hanako and her family arrive in Japan after imprisonment in U.S. internment camps and deportation. Their ship lands near devastated Hiroshima, where her grandparents live in the countryside. Food is scarce, and Hanako struggles when hungry people ask at the door, even as the adults tell her not to give away supplies needed by her own family. While the adults work, she starts at the village school and hopes to feel less like an outsider. News about restoring deported Japanese Americans’ civil rights changes the family’s situation.
