A refugee family’s journey toward a new home is told through brief wishes voiced by objects around them. As the family says goodbye and prepares to leave, a clock, bag, and boat each express a wish tied to the passage ahead. The journey continues through rough seas and hot weather with two small children in the family. Eventually the focus shifts to the people themselves as they reach a new place on a new day. The story is inspired by the author’s family’s refugee journey from Vietnam.
