When Stars Are Scattered

This nonfiction graphic memoir follows Omar and his younger brother Hassan after they are separated from their mother during an attack on their Somali village. Living with foster mother Fatuma in Kenya’s Dadaab refugee camp, Omar protects Hassan, who has a developmental disability and seizures. He is reluctant to start school but succeeds there, while the brothers endure years of waiting for possible resettlement and search for news of their mother. Their lives include friendships in the camp as well as shortages, crowding, and uncertainty.
