Fourteen teenage and young adult voices from San Francisco’s Japantown recount the imprisonment of Japanese and Japanese American people during World War II. Minnow, an aspiring artist, opens and closes the novel, while the other narrators describe events from March 1942 until shortly before victory in Europe. Families are sent from the Tanforan assembly center, located at a racetrack, to Topaz. Family conflict and disputes over a loyalty oath deepen their trauma, and some people are transferred to Tule Lake.
