Wave

Set in Southern California during the 1980s, this novel in free verse and concrete poetry follows Ava, a Persian American teenager. Surfing with Phoenix is the one place where she feels that she belongs. The story places her experience of the ocean alongside questions of identity and belonging. Black-and-white spot illustrations accompany a coming-of-age story about a girl who rides waves, falls, and works her way back toward shore.
