The Sandy Lake Tragedy: Following in the Footsteps of the Ojibwe

This book recounts the 1850 forced journey of 5,000 Ojibwe people across the Midwest to receive treaty payments owed by the U.S. government. When the payments do not arrive, they must make the return trip through dangerous winter conditions without the promised money or supplies. More than 400 Ojibwe people die in the event known as the Ojibwe Trail of Tears. The account examines its causes, consequences, and Ojibwe responses.
