The Quickest Kid in Clarksville

Pat Zietlow Miller

In segregated Clarksville, Tennessee, during the 1960s, Alta considers herself the town’s fastest runner and admires Olympic champion Wilma Rudolph. Her family cannot afford new sneakers, and a race with Charmaine leaves a hole in one of Alta’s shoes. On the day of a parade honoring Rudolph’s three Olympic gold medals, Alta and her friends make a large banner but struggle to carry it to the event. Charmaine suggests a relay so they can take turns bringing it there.
