Princess Izta rejects her wealthy suitors, but falls in love with Popoca, a warrior who promises to remain faithful and at her side. Izta’s father, the emperor, says the pair may marry if Popoca defeats their enemy, Jaguar Claw. As Popoca nears victory, Jaguar Claw sends false news that he has died. Believing the message, Izta falls into a deep sleep; when Popoca returns, he cannot wake her. This tale of devotion, deception, conflict, and loss centers on the two figures named in its title.
