The Secret Subway

Shana Corey, illustrated by Red Nose Studio

In the mid-nineteenth century, Alfred Ely Beach devised an underground train to ease New York City’s congested streets. Unable to gain approval for that project, he obtained permission for underground mail tubes and secretly had workers build a train-sized tunnel. Beach opened the decorated tunnel to visitors, but was denied permission to enlarge it. The subway then lay unused for forty years before workers rediscovered it while digging the New York City subway.
