Following her mother’s death, tenth grader Victoria Cruz attempts suicide and wakes in a psychiatric ward at a Texas hospital. Her father objects to her hospitalization, while Victoria initially has no wish to keep living. During the following weeks, she meets other people in the ward, including Mona, Gabriel, E.M., and a doctor. The story follows Victoria’s time in psychiatric care and asks whether she can recover a desire to live.
