The Long Ride
Marina Budhos
In 1971, three close friends—Jamila Clarke, Josie Rivera, and Francesca George—leave their Queens neighborhood as they begin junior high school. The girls come from mixed-race families with immigrant parents who have worked to establish their households in an area known for its schools. Jamila and Josie are assigned to an experimental school-integration program in South Jamaica, traveling there by bus, while Francesca enters a private school. As their lives diverge, the girls encounter unfamiliar expectations and new forms of being outsiders.
