The Elephant Girl

Twelve-year-old Jama prefers elephants to people and spends time at the watering hole outside her village. She befriends a baby elephant called Mbegu, meaning “seed” in Swahili. After Mbegu’s mother stampedes because she is frightened by poachers, Jama and Mbegu are blamed for the deaths of an elephant and a person. Leku, the new boy whose father heads the conservancy, may be able to help them.
