The Distance Between Us

This adaptation of Reyna Grande’s account follows Reyna’s early life in Mexico and her young adulthood in the United States. Reyna and her siblings first live with their paternal grandmother and then their maternal grandmother while their parents work in the United States. After their parents separate, their mother returns alone, and later their father visits with a new wife. Reyna and her siblings persuade him to take them to the United States. Following three dangerous border-crossing attempts, they arrive, and ten-year-old Reyna begins learning English, attending school, and adjusting to a new family structure.
