On a hot day, roommates Bat, Cat, and Rat head to the beach to cool off. Cat packs books, Bat brings a sun hat, and Rat carries a kite. Their seaside plans run into several troubles: a missed bus, hungry seagulls attracted by Bat’s snack, and Rat’s misplaced kite. Cat helps with the birds, and Bat later helps Rat search for the kite. The book tells the friends’ beach outing through several brief episodes of shared mishaps and assistance.
