As a middle-school student, Aprille Ericsson earned second place in a science fair and continued making science projects. She loved math and science at a time when few girls at her school shared those interests. Ericsson later became the first woman to receive a mechanical-engineering PhD from Howard University. At NASA, her engineering work helped create spacecraft for lunar mapping, climate monitoring, and returning Martian soil and rocks.
