Twelve-year-old Ben Bellini has become a competitive speller and hopes he may qualify for the national spelling bee. He spends a summer in 1980s San Francisco with his grandmother while training with a spelling coach. Ben gets to know the city and another determined contestant, Asha Krishnakumar, while friendships shift. He also notices troubling changes in his grandmother's memory and wonders whether he can get others to listen.
