In 1947, eleven-year-old Oriol, a Cuban immigrant living in Santa Barbara, helps her parents care for injured animals at their veterinary clinic. She struggles with belonging but finds purpose in the work. When poet and diplomat Gabriela Mistral comes to town, Oriol begins learning to write poetry. After a baby elephant at the clinic is threatened, Oriol works with Mistral on a campaign to reunite the animal with its family.
