Scarecited on the First Day of School

Afua starts her first day of school with feelings that do not fit neatly into one category. She is both scared and excited, so she calls herself “scarecited.” Rather than choosing one emotion over the other, Afua recognizes that both can be present at once. The story centers on her mixed feelings about beginning school and on finding her own word for the experience.
