After his aunt forces him out of her home in Mexico, Santiago meets Maria Dolores and her young daughter, Alegria. Maria Dolores invites him to travel with them toward the United States. A coyote takes them across the border, but a violent attack leaves the three stranded in the desert. Immigration patrol officers find them, and Santiago and Alegria are separated in a youth detention center. Over the following months, Santiago makes friends and begins learning to read with support from an educator.
