In 1955 Phoenix, Mexican American student Rosa Capistrano passes as white while attending a newly desegregated high school to improve her chance of studying journalism in college. Though Brown v. Board of Education permits her enrollment, the school remains unsafe for Mexican Americans. Rosa plans to keep a low profile until her white friend Julianne and longtime friend Ramón pursue an interracial relationship. After Julianne’s sheriff father kills both of them, Rosa is the sole eyewitness who can challenge his account of what happened.
