Teenager Tess moves to Hawthorne with her mother after her mother loses her job. There, after having an abortion, Tess is condemned by the Christian students around her. She promises herself that she will shield the boy involved, but later learns that he was a predator. This contemporary reworking of The Scarlet Letter follows a young woman facing judgment, faith-based peer pressure, and the consequences of protecting someone who harmed her.
