Ixchel, a young Mayan girl in a Guatemalan mountain community, wants to weave like her mother and other women around her. There is not enough thread for her to practice, so she experiments with grass and raw wool on a homemade back-strap loom. When those materials do not make fabric suitable for the market, she turns to discarded plastic bags. After washing, drying, and cutting them into strips, Ixchel weaves the material into colorful fabric. The book includes English and Spanish text.
