This nonfiction book recounts events in Arkansas in 1919, when Black sharecroppers gathered at a church to organize for fair crop prices. After armed white men attacked the meeting and burned the church, violence spread through the area, killing many people. Twelve Black men who had attended the gathering were arrested, convicted of murder, and given death sentences in an unfair trial. Scipio Jones, a Black attorney born into enslavement, represented them for years and carried one case to the U.S. Supreme Court.
