Two Chinese American teens in California navigate difficult relationships with parents and peers while their connections to culture differ sharply. One comes from a traditional background, while the other has assimilated to the point of cultural erasure. Serene hopes to design couture dresses and works as an intern at her mother’s fashion label. When her mother is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Serene must take over the business and tries to understand what happened with her father in Beijing.
