During the Depression, Pavel, a Russian Jewish immigrant newly arrived in America, joins the Civilian Conservation Corps after learning that it is hiring young people. His work includes planting trees, building dams, and caring for the land. Some Corps members challenge his place in the country because he is an immigrant. Pavel and other immigrant workers prepare to sing “The Star-Spangled Banner” for an Independence Day celebration.
