An octopus arrives on a village roof and remains there. The village children quickly become its friends, while the adults are wary of the unusual visitor. The octopus proves helpful in unexpected ways: it serves as a slide, helps with painting, and rescues a cat from a tree. After the neighbors decide they would each like an octopus, it disappears, leaving open the question of where it has gone and whether it will return.
