Mabel Fairbanks sees skaters gliding and spinning at Central Park’s rink and decides she wants to skate. Orphaned in 1923 when she was eight, she teaches herself the sport. Fairbanks becomes America’s first Black figure-skating star and later the first Black athlete inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame. Colorful illustrations portray her life and skating.
