Lady of the Lines: How Maria Reiche Saved the Nazca Lines by Sweeping the Desert

This nonfiction account follows Maria Reiche after she travels to Peru in 1941 and encounters the Nazca Lines, enormous images made in the desert by the Nazca people. Using brooms, she clears sand and rocks from the markings, measures them, and sketches their shapes because they cannot be viewed whole from the ground. Her work brings attention to the lines, and she later joins efforts to protect them when irrigation threatens the desert.
