In the summer of 2009, rising ninth-grader Karthik makes deliveries for his family’s failing grocery store. The South Asian American teenager is carrying family responsibilities while the business struggles. Without telling his family, Karthik also takes a role in a play about Leonard Bernstein. His delivery work unexpectedly leads him toward acting. The secret part in the production creates a pull between his family duties and his own aspirations. The novel places the grocery store’s financial difficulties beside Karthik’s growing involvement in theater.
