It All Comes Down to This

Karen English

During the summer of 1965, twelve-year-old Sophie and her upper-middle-class Black family have recently moved to a mostly white Los Angeles neighborhood. Sophie wants to write her own book, spend time with her friend Jennifer, and win a part in a community play. As the summer unfolds, she encounters racism in exclusions and a store clerk’s suspicion. She also struggles to understand why the family’s new Black housekeeper, Mrs. Baylor, dislikes her. Meanwhile, Sophie’s sister Lily’s relationship with Mrs. Baylor’s politically active son creates tension, alongside their father’s affair.
